Workshop Description:
Background
Embark on a journey of exploration into the impactful realm of leadership, purpose, and personality through this workshop. I find immense satisfaction in dissecting the interplay between our information processing, decision-making, and worldview concerning our personality, purpose, and leadership capabilities. Extensive studies consistently underscore the significance of personality types and the cultivation of preferences in elucidating the dynamics of attraction, relationship formation, collaborative work, and team support. Recognizing one's own personality type and navigating interpersonal interactions are pivotal in establishing and sustaining healthy, dynamic relationships.
Goal/Rationale:
Collecting insights from participants about their individual journeys in connection to leading with purpose contributes valuable perspectives to the extensive literature on leadership, particularly in the realm of purpose-driven leadership. Despite this, what is frequently absent from the discourse, extending to the literature and empirical research, is a thorough exploration of the intersectionality of leadership, purpose, and personality. Nevertheless, this presents participants with a unique opportunity to actively contribute to and enrich the ongoing discussion in this area.
Scope and Information for Participants:
The hypothesis posits that an exhaustive examination of leadership in research must encompass integral elements like purpose and personality. However, current research tends to restrict the understanding of leadership within isolated perspectives. Within these confines, participants are encouraged to approach the discourse on leadership, purpose, and personality holistically, rather than in isolation. Moreover, while combining these elements is a crucial initial step, it must be followed by an exploration of their collective impact on organizational success, employee engagement, and societal contributions.
Highlights
Dr. Rick Arrowood, Professor of Leadership and Organizational Management, conducted an ICLLCD Workshop titled “The Intersection of Personality, Leadership, and Behaviors” on April 29, 2024. The workshop took place at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, where undergraduate business students attended.
Focusing on the dynamics of personality and behaviors within leadership contexts, Dr. Arrowood provided a comprehensive overview encompassing energy preferences, information processing methods, decision-making styles, and worldview perspectives. The workshop featured experiential exercises aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of fundamental concepts.
One such exercise involved attendees naturally signing their names, followed by using their non-dominant hand—a demonstration revealing discomfort in unfamiliar situations. This activity underscored the significance of comprehending personality dynamics, not only within oneself but also in relation to others. The lecture delved into leadership essentials, emphasizing the intricacies of the leader-follower relationship. Attendees engaged in insightful discussions regarding how personality and attitudes shape individual behaviors, further enriching their understanding of effective leadership practices.
